The student will create a short clip using Stop Motion techniques. That movie will be eligible to participate in the Stop Motion Awards 3 ceremony where some judges will choose the best videos. Stop motion (also known as stop frame) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using plasticine is called clay animation or "clay mation" and there are some other techniques.

Create a board game that utilizes all of the Westward Expansion and Oregon Trail research. You must create a rules page (how to play the game) that describes how to play and each detail of the game. The game board needs to be creative, with a game name, and all of the materials to play the game must be included. Fact cards (about the Westward expansion) must be printed by hand or typed, as well as other card piles you create.

Advertisement poster created on paper provided by teacher. Must include authentic Westward Movement ideas to convince immigrants to travel west. Social Studies book is an excellent reference. Include a works cited page.

Students must build a "farm" on their plot of land they were given from the Oregon Claims Act. The structure can be no bigger than a 11X15 base and include vital elements to living on a farm. Must include a works cited and a 1 page paper giving a detailed description of all elements of the farm.

Students create an ABC book using elements from the Westward Expansion. These can be presented on paper or creation of a slide show. Use all 26 letters of the alphabet for full points. Include all websites used in a works cited page.

Students are to make a propaganda flyer or poster that would entice a person in the mid-1800's to move westward. Posters are to include a slogan, facts and a picture.

Make a comic strip modeling Westward Movement of a family in the mid 1800's. Comic strips are to include written elements (such as factual thought bubbles, headings, dialogue), facts and a minimum of 20 frames of time appropriate drawings. Also include a works cited for any web information used.

Below is a chart that shows you exactly how your behavior in a group will be graded. All students are expected to participate in their group! Students should understand that their participation mark begins at 0 and then is built up through active participation.

Students are required to read a biography about a person of their choice. They are then to create a trading card to summarize the book. Paragraphs will be completed in school.
