The Advanced Placement Studio Art class

This is an assignment to teach the student the power of shading values, by drawing a still life. Shadows make parts of the artwork appear to go back. Highlights bring other parts toward us. A gradient is a subtle change from shadows to highlights. Gradients done right give the appearance of 3D forms, not just shapes.

A rubric that properly evaluates the artistic process of a student using correct techniques with their drawing pencils.

Create a split piece using chalk and oil pastels to demonstrate knowledge of cool versus warm colors and their tints and shades.

Students were asked to bring their own photo in, edit and print on photoshop, and use a grid that doubles the size of the printed image. Students will be graded on drawing accuracy and matching values found within the photo.

Students create an abstract 4 part color theory painting with a focus on line weight and color relationships

Students were asked to create their own creative mandala color wheel with a focus on line weights and radial designs.

Students were asked to create their own creative color wheel with a focus on shapes to create objects rather than line work.

Students trace a provided creative color wheel and paint it accordingly. Students were asked to have colors in proper places, create matched hues, have hand and eye control with their brush, treat the paper properly, and label their colors.

After reviewing the 12 basic colors that make up the color wheel, students will apply basic geometry tools and principals to draw a symmetrical color wheel. Students will use the principles and elements of design to alter the basic wheel form into a more detailed, harmonious composition. Using the primary colors, students will accurately mix and paint the secondary and tertiary colors in the correct position. Students will finalize their pieces by outlining their composition in black marker.

Students will have designated sketchbook time in class. Students will include project notes in their sketchbooks, draw their ideas, and have written processes before creating. Sketchbook entries may need to be completed outside of class.
