Students engage in teacherless debate using primary text and secondary sources.

Students will be given a reading assignment (e.g., a chapter from current class book or story) for homework and be responsible for comprehension and fluency of a section.

Students will compose a speech as one of the characters from one of the epics that we are studying (Beowulf, The Iliad, and The Odyssey). Student’s speeches must have a theme or focus that is relevant to the epic they choose. Themes must be reinforced throughout the speech and the climax of the speech must be both intriguing and thought provoking. Students will be graded on theme, theme reinforcing methods, and the strength of the climax of the speech.

Topic given on exam. Must have previously prepared outline (part 1) for essay (part 2).

Class assignment to produce free verse poem taking into account multiple revisions

Student will give a 3+ (5+) minute minimum speech.

While working in pairs, students will work on social/emotional objectives during lesson 11.

Students were to discuss the theme found in short stories read in class. They were to support their theme with examples from the text.

Students respond analytically to literary text.

This rubric is used to evaluate the quality of notes taken during analytical reading. These should NOT be summaries of the text but contain thoughts, comments, feelings, and questions about the texts that the student reads. They should look for and note things that seem important to them. Students should tell what they think and feel and how they connect to the story.
