Course Description:

College skills is an opportunity for those students fresh out of high school to learn helpful ways to make a smooth transition into college.  This course offers students many different note taking skills, study habits, and oral presentation skills.  Students, who take this course, learn to understand and deal with their problems dealing with school.  This course teaches students to get more on track in school, and look and work towards their future.

Diversity Workshop:

The diversity workshop is designed to teach students to look at others with open eyes and open hearts.  With prejudice and discrimination resembling a wall that keeps you from the rest of the world.  I learned so much in attending the diversity workshop.  The diversity workshop taught me that not everyone around me is as common as I once thought.  I learned that you can completely sum a person up just by looking at them.  The saying "you can't judge a book by its cover" really is true. I made many friends in this workshop and learned that everyone really is different; whether it be from religion, race, ethnicity, or simply the lifestyle in which they have grown up in and are accustomed to.  I no longer look at those around me as being just like me.

The Veterans Day Event:

The veterans day event was held at the flag pole in the front of the school.  I felt a whole new kind of passion when the head speaker placed a black flag on a chair behind him to resemble the missing soldiers in the war right now.  I never understood how serious the wars that have been fought in our country truly are.  Not only has having a veteran in my success team helped me to openly understand the severities of war, but the video we recently watched in COL 105.  The video is about soldiers from the Vietnam War.  It shows just how scary and difficult it can be for all of those brave people.  At the veterans day event, I loved getting to hear a previous veteran speak.  It really did touch my heart to hear how much pride that many people have for our country.

The peotry cafe:

I attended the poetry cafe in hopes that I would get to hear tons and tons of poetry.  I did not realize that this event was more like an open mike event for students.  I was very proud of my fellow team mate, Martha, for getting up in front of the class and reading some of her own poetry.  I personally think that she blew what the others read out of the water.  Martha has a lot of talent in her writing; I only hope that I will be at least half as great as she is at writing one day.  The poetry cafe did make me realize that I do need to work more on writing.  Writing is something that I love to do.  I gave just been told by too many people that I have too many errors in my writing.
