English 101 Portfolio

RCampus

*COL105*

Description of course: My college skills class does more than just teach students how to succeed in college. COL 105 teaches students to be more diverse, become better at time management, and it teaches students how to work well with other people. There are some situations in life where you need to know how to communicate with certain people and COL 105 teaches students what type of language is appropriate in certain situations.  In the real world, people need to know how to get along and work together and that is what COL 105 will teach.

Two Out of Class Events:

Diversity Workshop:
When I attended the Diversity Workshop I was very excited. I truly wanted to learn how to become more diverse and accept people for who they are. In this workshop we talked about many different races, religions, families, and and anything else that could be unique about a person. We all had to stand up and say our name and favorite band, which was kind of an ice breaker for everyone. We were able to interact with the other people in the workshop and the instructors were also very involved. I really enjoyed learning about all of the different kinds of people in just one room. Everyone was different yet, we could share our backgrounds with each other and feel comfortable. I really believed this workshop opened my eyes a little more to the fact that everyone is not just like me.

Reflection: In the Diversity Workshop, I learned about how everyone is different even if it is small. I got to talk and interact with people who were just like me and totally different from me. From attending this workshop I gained experience with learning to talk and get to know other types of people. I plan on becoming more diverse and getting to know many different types of people in the world. I will improve self by knowing that the people that are around me everyday are not necessarily the same as I am.

Plagiarism Workshop: In the Plagiarism Workshop we learned about how to cite all of the information you use in a paper or project. We learned the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing material. This workshop was very informative and useful. I learned a lot of new things that I had not learned in high school. This workshop helped me when it was time to write an English or Sociology paper. I really enjoyed this workshop and definitely would attend another one just like it.

Reflection: The Plagiarism Workshop was very informative and interesting. Learning the right way to cite and paraphrase things gave me a better understanding of the things we were learning in English. By attending this workshop, I felt more confident when I was in English class or when I had to write an essay. This workshop improved my citation skills dramatically. If I could attend another plagiarism workshop I would and I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone else.
