What is Chemistry?

"Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions." (Wikipedia)

Throughout the duration of this course you will be responsible for learning the six standards for Chemistry.  The standards for chemistry establish scientific inquiry skills and core content for all chemistry courses in South Carolina schools.

Chemistry Overview:

  • The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the use of scientific inquiry, technological design and mathematical analysis to pose appropriate questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.
  • The student will demonstrate an understanding of atomic structure and nuclear processes.
  • The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structures and classifications of chemical compounds.
  • The student will demonstrate an understanding of the types, the causes, and the effects of chemical reactions.
  • The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and behavior of the different phases of matter.
  • The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nature and properties of various types of chemical solutions.
