Drama is an art form. It is taught using this art form as well as teaching the students how to use and manipulate it. But for what purpose? To write good plays? To improve their acting skills? To have fun? These may all be aspects of the work but using the art form has richer possibilities for
both the teacher and the class. Used effectively, it becomes a tool, which develops the studentsÂ’ ability to question, examine, discuss and understand. Being a collective art form it also develops their social and personal skills, being a form of art it develops their linguistic and expressive skills. Dealing with the human condition it develops their understanding of society
and the world they live in. Below is a breakdown of how the two areas of
the subject work. To some extent the labels are somewhat artificial and many of the categories overlap in practice.
